春熙路 is the major commercial center. But most cities in China have 美食街-a street specifically devoted to food. In Chengdu, 一品天下 is such a street. Honestly, food in 春熙路 is not cheap. Especially for stuff like Starbucks, Haagen Daz, we are really paying for the nice environment and atmosphere. However, it's important to note that these are after all finger foods. In China, food provides the platform for social gathering. Family meets for dinner in holidays. Weddings have huge banquets. Business negotiation gets done in toast after toast. Now at the Spring festival season, most employers have 春节团拜会。 The idea is to create an occasion to get everyone together and have some fun. These are the biggest part of the market. Starbucks might cost 20-40yuan per person. For someone that just wants to sit down have some snack, it is not cheap. But in these huge dinners, it could cost easily 100-500 per person, or even more.
一品天下, is a street that mainly caters to these occasions. It concentrates rather high-end resturants. At the main gate, it says" 美食天府,吃在成都”, basically bragging about Sichuan's good food. Reasonably, this street features traditional cuisine. As we can see from the archetecture style, "traditional" is very much the idea. None of these resturants are from the West or even follow their cuisine style. I personally think this is a cultural difference. In China at dinner table, especially with many people gathering, the idea is to 热闹. Making noise is the key.
People would toast around, make fun of each other, singing KTV even. It's hard to imagine all this to happen in Pizzahut, or any western resturant. Thus in these western food places, we usually find small group of people, many alone, many couples. Especially the young would pursue the feeling of experiencing something exotic. But as for banquets, Chinese cuisine is almost the only choice.一品天下is a perfect example.
[Note.in some five-star hotels, there exist really authentic foreign cuisine and business meetings can happen there, especially with foreign partners.]
